Musical Portfolio
Kayden Collins
Music has been a constant presence in my life for over thirteen years, shaping both my creative identity and technical skill set. My primary instrument is the drums, and through percussion I have developed a strong understanding of rhythm, timing, dynamics, and musical structure. I currently perform as an active member of the God’s House of Prayer music department, where I play regularly during live church services. Performing in a worship setting has strengthened my ability to listen attentively, adapt in real time, and support the overall sound of an ensemble in front of a live audience. My performance experience spans multiple styles, with a strong foundation in gospel as well as influences from hip-hop and R&B. Through consistent performance, I have gained hands-on experience with music theory concepts such as tempo, meter, and song form, applying them practically rather than academically. Drumming has taught me how rhythmic choices influence energy, emotion, and momentum, and how precision and consistency are essential to effective live performance. These experiences have helped me develop discipline, musical awareness, and a collaborative mindset, allowing me to contribute meaningfully within ensemble environments while continuing to grow as a musician.
In addition to performance, I am deeply involved in the technical side of music production through my work with live sound and recording at my church. I assist with microphone and speaker setup, sound reinforcement, and audio recording for services, gaining firsthand experience with how sound systems operate in real-world environments. Through this work, I have learned how microphone placement, gain structure, and level balancing directly affect both live sound quality and recorded clarity. Being responsible for sound reinforcement has shown me how closely music and technology are connected, and how small technical adjustments can significantly change how music is experienced by an audience. I enjoy troubleshooting audio challenges under real-time pressure and finding solutions that enhance clarity and balance. This hands-on experience sparked my interest in music technology and solidified my desire to pursue formal study in this field. By combining my background as a drummer with practical audio experience, I have developed both creative and technical skills that motivate me to pursue Music Technology at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where I hope to deepen my knowledge of audio engineering, acoustics, and sound design within an innovative, interdisciplinary environment.
